Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the 2026 North Atlantic hurricane season, formed this week.
Initially identified by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) as Potential Tropical Cyclone One on Tuesday, 16 June while centred over south Texas, inland from the Gulf Coast near Corpus Christi. Arthur briefly intensified to Tropical Storm status on Wednesday, 17 June after moving offshore. It subsequently moved inland near Matagorda, Texas before dissipating late on Wednesday east of Houston towards the boarder with Louisiana.
While Arthur brought tropical storm-force winds and heavy rainfall and localised flash flooding to the Texas Gulf Coast and parts of southwestern Louisiana no impacts are expected to any ILS investments.
Arthur’s formation is closely aligned with the average date for the first storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season, the median date of first named storm formation over the last five decades is 18 June. Arthur is however a clear example of the type of storm that is known to be missing from the earlier part of historical records when reporting practices and our ability to identify and detect short lived and weaker storms differed significantly from today. While these types of storms are of limited relevance to (re-)insurance and ILS, careful interpretation is nevertheless important for any statistics involving such weak storms.
The NHC is currently monitoring the remnants of Arthur as they track over Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas with a small possibility of (re-) development into a Tropical Storm once the system crosses offshore over the weekend. Irrespective of development, no ILS impacts are expected.
