On Wednesday, 26 August a suspected glacial collapse in Nepal’s Langtang National Park caused a flash flood with significant debris flows along several rivers in central Nepal and southern Tibet. Catastrophic damage has been reported in areas along the Lhende Khola, Bhote Koshi and Trishuli Rivers in the Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Dhading districts. Current reports suggest at least 475 people have died with the final number of fatalities likely to be significantly higher. While ILS and (re-) insurance impacts are not expected from this event, the impact on the local economy and society of such a devastating event will be significant.

The ongoing event in Nepal, along with multiple significant catastrophe events in 2026 (notable worldwide earthquakes, as well as wildfires across both the US and Europe) continues to highlight the need to address critical protection gaps and expand the role of both insurance and broader pre-arrange financing to protect people, property and livelihoods.

Elsewhere, in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Dolly has developed in the central tropical Atlantic. Dolly is not forecast to reach Hurricane strength and while some impacts across the Leeward Caribbean Islands are expected over the weekend these are not expected to be severe. Dolly is expected to dissipate in the northern Caribbean early next week. Once Dolly or its remnants exits the Caribbean, there is a low probability of re-development around the Bahamas or further north. There is significant uncertainty at these longer forecast times, the probability of any US impacts does however remain very low.

In the Pacific, high activity, particularly in the eastern Pacific, continues. Long-lived Toprical Storm LaLa is finally expected to become post-tropical today while Tropical storms Karina and Lowell both developed yesterday. Both storms are forecast to potentially reach major hurricane intensity over the coming days. While Karina is not forecast to impact land, Lowell is forecast to pass close to Hawaii. There is significant uncertainty at these longer forecast times, we will update clients as the forecast for Lowell clarifies.
